A Word From Kurt Edwards - IBAC Director-General

Kurt Edwards

Last month IBAC represented business aviation at the ICAO High-Level Meeting on the Feasibility of a Long-Term Aspirational Goal for International Aviation CO2 Emissions Reductions (HLM-LTAG), which included delegations more than 100 countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to provide a set of conclusions and recommendations to the ICAO Council to inform its recommendation to the Assembly this fall on whether and at what level of ambition to set a long-term carbon emissions reduction goal.  While the meeting was not “decisional”, it was considered an important precursor to the longer debate of a central topic at the Assembly from 27 September to 7 October.

As you know, IBAC and the broader global aviation community have already committed to a highly ambitious long-term goal for our carbon emissions: net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.  Working with the associations representing airlines, airports, manufacturers, and air navigation services providers, coordinated by the Air Transport Action Group, we advocated that ICAO member states commit to the same aspirational goal and indicate their resolve to participate actively in supporting or facilitating efforts to reach the goal.  We co-sponsored an ATAG working paper advancing this message and submitted an information paper outlining sustainability efforts by the business aviation community.

In addition to support for the goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, there were many favorable recommendations and conclusions for the Council.  The meeting’s conclusions can be found at this link. Its message will undergo further revision and enhancement over the next two months before the Assembly, a process in which IBAC will be engaged.

We are excited to participate in next week’s LABACE 2022 in São Paulo, Brazil, presented by Associação Brasileira de Aviação Geral (ABAG), an IBAC member association. If you are attending, please stop by our stand and visit us!
